Dolores Mitchell
Saturday February 26, 9-4

A good time was had by all! Click here to see what happened!

Did you ever wonder how such painters as Rubens and Van Eyck created strongly modeled forms without muddying colors? Underpainting in gray values and glazing in color is one of the answers.

No experience is needed to take this workshop. The $50 fee includes a masonite panel and black and white acrylic gesso. Bring oil painting materials, or for a $5 material fee, they will be supplied, except for brushes.

In the morning, participants will produce a gray value underpainting of a still life. Dolores will discuss ways to create a center of interest. Panels will dry during the lunch break. In the afternoon, Dolores, using oil paints, demonstrates glazing with transparent colors as well as impasto, or opaque techniques. Participants complete paintings and a critique follows.

Participants may bring a few fruits or vegetables (no flowers), such as lemons, peppers, apples or grapes, or use ones Dolores will bring. Bring a flat and a round bristle brush for the acrylic gesso and a flat and a round synthetic or sable for oil paint (don't bring sable watercolor brushes). Bring a palette and paper towels or rags. Oil paints should include both transparent and opaque colors plus a medium. Dolores can supply the oil paints and medium for a $5.00 fee.
