ARTIST GUIDELINES ARTIST GUIDELINES

Here are newly-developed (March 2005) guidelines to assist artists exploring exhibition possibilities at Avenue 9 Gallery:

Step One.

Call to set up a time when a portfolio can be dropped off at the gallery. We will not be looking at the work or discussing exhibition possibilities on the drop-off day.

The portfolio should contain:
a. One-page art biographical statement which covers education in
art, show record and other art-related activities such as teaching;
b. One-page statement that gives insight into themes and art processes;
c. 6 to 8 good-quality slides or photographs of recent art;
d. A one-page description stating what aims you have in mind in conjunction with Avenue 9 Gallery. For example, do you hope to have a one- or two-person show? Or is it your wish to display art more casually in the gallery’s art racks or as part of a group show?
e. Artists who desire a one- or two-person show need to submit a fourth page that covers:
1) theme of the proposed show
2) medium
3) approximate sizes and numbers of works completed
4) prices of works (with the gallery’s 40% commission figured in)

Step Two.

Approximately a week after receiving the portfolio, we will contact the artist to set up an appointment on a Wednesday (the day of the week we have reserved for this purpose). If work schedules make a Wednesday appointment a hardship a weekend appointment may be possible.

We encourage artists to attend our receptions and study the art on display. This website contains a growing archive of past exhibitions (we'll be putting all of 2004 on-line as soon as possible) and links to future activities.

By engaging in this study process artists will be able to understand gallery aims better and to decide whether a good match might exist with the artist’s work.
