2006

January 20-February 12 (reception Fri. January 20, 5-8 p.m.): "Textural," a collaborative installation by photographer Carla Resnick, writer Anthony Peyton Porter, and musician Dann Sargent. Also recent sculpture by Dave Lawton.

February 17-March 19 (reception Fri. February 17, 5-8 p.m.): Ann Pierce, paintings, "Signs of the Zodiac";" Enyer Buroz, ceramics, "Ancestor Figures."

Mar. 24-April 30 (reception Fri. March 24, 5-8 pm): Michael Diven’s paintings and Alan Carrier’s sculptural constructions in the exhibition "Figures x 2."

Spring Paint Out: Join old friends and make new ones by painting on location in gardens and agricultural holdings. Three long week-ends plus "rain-check" days: March 24, 25, 26; March 3l, April l, 2; April 8, 9, 10. The $30 fee guarantees inclusion of at least one work in our "Picture Your Valley" exhibition of May 5-July 23; no additional exhibition application fee.

May 5-July 23: "Picture Your Valley" (reception May 5, 5-8 pm): Application deadline April l5. Artists may submit three images via e-mail attachments or as photos sent to us. A $20 application fee (paid by check or in person by cash) should reach Avenue 9 by April 15. The fee is waived for Spring Paint Out participants.

July 28-Oct 1: "Fibers 2006": Featuring Eva Henneberry's masterful quilts as well as the work of 12 other extraordinary fiber artists.  This special exhibit is accompanied by a series of demonstrations, a poetry reading, and a workshop.

Nov.17-Jan 14: Our 2nd Annual "Chico Icons" exhibition: Our 2005 exhibition proved one of our most popular shows with the public. Artists should start looking for Icons now. Viewers have suggested: Bear Hole, Janet Turner, Morning Thunder, John Nopel, Cherry Trees, The Bear, Paul and Pat Feldhaus, Annie’s Glen….and, many more (a list from last year's "Missing Icons" offered up by the public will be published)! A $20 application fee is to be accompanied by up to 3 images (files attached to e-mails, CDs, or prints delivered to the gallery). Application deadline: November 1.

Jan. 19- Feb. 25, 2007: "Small Works from the Heart" exhibition: We invite artists in any medium to submit up to 3 images by e-mail, CDs or prints by snail mail for consideration in this show. An application fee of $20 must reach the gallery by the December 15, 2006 submission deadline. The largest dimension of works is to be 12 inches. Collectors and public alike will love this show!

 

2005

December through Sunday, January 9: “Peace and Harmony” exhibit.

January 1st. Deadline to apply for “Plein Air Painting in Sherwood Forest” competition This on location painting competition highlights the year long celebration of Bidwell Park’s Centennial. Following two days of painting on July 20 and 21, noted painter and art instruction book author Gerald Brommer will award $5,000 in prizes. Chosen participants to be announced by March 15.

January 14, Friday, 5-8 p.m. Reception for painter Bruce Ertle’s exhibition “Life Overlooked.” Ertle, who relocated to Chico three years ago from San Diego, celebrates scenes of “ordinary events which are the substance of daily life.” On Sunday, January 16 at 2pm, Ertle spoke about his work. The exhibit runs through February.

January 28, Friday, 5-8 p.m. A special event and auction to benefit the Sacred Stones of Vina Monastery was held Friday January 28 from 5-8 p.m. Thomas Arvid, famed painter of wine from Atlanta, Georgia, spoke about his painting process and experience in building a career in art. See ER Buzz article by Holly Vinson January 27 in pdf format, page 1 and page 2.

February 26, Saturday, 9-4p.m. Dolores Mitchell workshop on “Old Master Under-painting, Glazing and Impasto Techniques for Oil Painting.” No experience is needed. The $50 fee includes a masonite panel and black and white gesso. Bring oil painting materials, or for a $5 materials fee, they will be supplied, except for brushes. In the morning, participants will produce a grey value underpainting of a still life. Dolores will discuss ways to create a center of interest. Panels will dry during the lunch break. In the afternoon, Dolores, using oil paints, demonstrates glazing and impasto techniques in color. Participants complete paintings and a critique follows.

March 4, Friday, 6-9 p.m. Reception for artist Betty O’Hare’s exhibition, "From Chaos to Serenity." This exhibit features mixed media sculptures related to modern addictions and disorders as well as abstract paintings that speak of peace. Through March.

March 6, Sunday, 2-p.m. A conversation with Betty O'Hare.

March 12, Saturday. Marion Bronson "Bidwell Park in Winter" photographs exhibition opened at the Chico Creek Nature Center.  Through September.  Date of Reception TBA.  This is a BPCC event.

March 19, Saturday 9-4 p.m. Maria Phillips will offer a watercolor workshop on the “charcoal-resist” technique. The $50 fee will include the powdered charcoal and fixative. Call for information.

April plein air painting extravaganza, "A Month of Sundays—and Saturdays!" This is the second annual campaign of plein air painting in Chico gardens. Artists will paint in their choice of 14 Chico gardens over a period of four week-ends (April 2-3; 9-10; 16-17; and 23-24). This paint-out extravaganza culminates in a "Fresh Paint" sidewalk sale at the gallery on April 30 and May 1. The $20 enrollment fee includes 14 gardens to paint in, participation in a "Fresh Paint" sale, and inclusion in our May exhibit of the same name. Call gallery for enrollment form.

April 2, Sat. 6-9p.m. Opening reception for Ray Kruger and Dolores Mitchell exhibition, "Sacred and Profane " Through May 1. Kruger and Mitchell, cousins, talk about their mutual Chicago Art Institute background as well as how practices of painting from nature and from the imagination enrich each other and have also informed their art.

April 9, Saturday, 9-4 p.m. Ray Kruger, back by popular demand, will offer an outdoor painting workshop for all media.

May 6, 6-9 p.m. Opening reception for "A Month of Sundays--and Saturdays! " featuring work by artists participating in the April plein air painting extravaganza. The artists will speak of their experiences in painting in Chico gardens.

June 10, 6-9 p.m. Opening reception for Rick Deragon and Karen Nagano paintings, Indoors/Outdoors. Through July 3.

June 18, 9-4 p.m. A Creativity Workshop: Dolores and Maria will give this day long ‘spa’ for the imagination. Our first creativity workshop was a great hit; it proved to participants that dorment creative urges can spring to life through play with materials, sounds, words, and sights. This workshop suits all ages and all levels of art experience—even no experience at all! People in stressful occupations such as health professionals, mothers, fathers, teachers and business people find pleasure and relaxation in a day devoted to the imagination.

July 22. 9 a.m. Book Signing by Judge Gerald Brommer at Lyon Books downtown next to Post Office.

July 22. One-day only Salon exhibit of "Sherwood Forest Plein Air Painting" competition paintings beginning at noon.  Visitors are invited to choose their favorite for a "people's choice"prize.  Judge Gerald Brommer will be in the gallery choosing the winners.  Silent auction will begin. Reception is from 5-8 p.m.

July 23. "Quick-Draw" competitive paint-out at Bidwell Mansion from 9-12, judged by Lenn Goldmann. 

July 23. 1 p.m. Diamond Alley exhibit of competition paintings.

July 23. 4 p.m. , award of prizes for Sherwood Forest Competition. Live auction follows on grounds of the Hotel Diamond.
