Chella graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Science in Art Education and came to California in 1956. Over the past 40 years, while teaching, she also exhibited and won many awards with her own work in competitive regional and national art shows. Her works are in many private collections.

Chella is an accomplished artist in various media and styles including non-representation and abstraction, but she prefers "en plein air" oil painting, working in ag-related subjects that is part of the vanishing landscape. She is also an active illustrator and is a strong arts education advocate in various community agencies in the Modesto area. She has studied with many distinguished nationally-known artists, and was recently selected to be an associate member of Oil Painters of America.
