Christine Jennings

Jennings is a local legend for her virtuoso hangable and wearable batiks. At Avenue 9 Gallery.... there are wall hangings, scarves, kimonos, and much more.  And Saturday, Sept. 16, 2-4 pm, Chris Jennings gives a free demonstration, "Traditional Hot Wax Batik."

.

This wall hanging celebrates purple grapes--and the love of art.

ARTIST STATEMENT

CHRISTINE JENNINGS

Batik is a continuing adventure for me. Each creation provides unexplored surprises, discoveries and unsolved mysteries keeping my passion alive so the magic can happen!

I was introduced to batik in 1972 by a T-shirt purchased from a street vendor on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley. Fascinated by the abstract design that was quite obviously not tie-dye, I took a class at the CSUC Craft Center to learn the basics while earning my BA in Humanities--I was hooked for life.

My batik wearables include silk scarves and comfortable natural fiber clothing. I also create detailed fine art batiks of landscapes, historical landmarks and wild life.  Recently I received three Chico Arts Commission Mini Grants for large batik public art projects. I have installed a Map of California at the Chico Branch of the Butte County Library and am working on a batik of Hooker Oak and Upper Bidwell Park for the lobby of the main Chico Post Office.

The final batik masterpiece above, Habitat, had to go through many states before appearing as it does. It is at the gallery. Below is an abbreviated history of one such batik work.
