Pat Hall

Pat Hall prepares to give a demonstration of her free-hand pattern design at the gallery

Artist's Statement , Chico, July 2006

If these clothes look to you as if made of scraps or remade out of discards--sewn irregularly, overpriced and seriously flawed in other ways--it is only because you are unusually perceptive.  Even so, I like the clothes I make better than anything I can buy; and of the many hundreds of garments I have made and sold in Chico, very few have come back.

I work by cutting garments directly out of cloth, without using patterns.  That means that each garment is unique, even my tank tops (which are now 'curvier' than they used to be years ago).  Good training in watercolor has helped me to mix dyes creatively in a sink. Just as in painting, I strive for a magical resonance between colors in an ensemble.  My feeling for color is unscientific...it's an art!
