"On Water and Charcoal"

Maria Phillips
Saturday March 19, 2005, 9-4
$50 ($25 to reserve space)

The Goat, by Maria Phillips

This workshop is based on the premise that the only rule in painting watercolors is that you use water. There are many techniques that incorporate the use of gessos, glues, inks, acrylics, and charcoal—a myriad of pigments and possible combinations of opacities, transparencies, and layering. This workshop will explore one of these techniques, based on water and charcoal powder, that allows for some unexpected and random effects.  To wit: The Goat, above.

This is a versatile technique that lends itself to the application of other layers of color, whether watercolor, charcoal, conte crayon, ink, or whatever else may strike your fancy, as in The Studio, below.

The Studio, by Maria Phillips

For this workshop, leave home pre-conceived ideas and bring your usual watercolor materials. Charcoal powder, sticks, conte crayons, and fixatives will be provided. The day's work will include both negative and positive approaches to design, so please be thinking of some ideas you would like to try. Photographs to work from and further design ideas will be provided and suggested by Maria.

For other projected workshops, see our Workshops page.
