"Alan Carrier "

Artist's Statement

In my sculptures, I use a combination of found objects including vintage pieces and toys that become effective "body parts" for figural constructions. I fasten the parts with a variety of methods including bolts, glue, rivets and screws. I create armatures using various welding techniques.

I have been creating assemblage art constructions for many years. I am also a collector and dealer of antiques and vintage toys & other objects. My love of art, antiques and humor has resulted in a creative fusion that has inspired the birth of a family of amusing robotic beings, creatures, and critters (artdroids). It is satisfying to rescue potential landfill and assign a new value and vision to formerly worthless castaways.

In addition to the collecting of things both precious and not, I am a recycler at heart and a "recontexturalist" in the art sense. I get my inspirations from diverse sources.

I travel about the world seeking "stuff" to work with. I enjoy the hunt for body parts. These things must speak to me and reference a memory, an emotion and/or past history in order to catch my attention. The objects and components translate, during the art-making process, into figurative containers that chronicle recollections. The qualities that attract me to
these objects are a direct result of what has happened to them over timeand place. Many of these unique parts carry rich associations that reference their past lives when they functioned in a vastly different capacity. One of my goals is to bring these diverse parts together to fabricate another whole object with only a hint of its original purpose.

These whimsically arranged new objects, combined with color, mystery, and humor, morph into a family of dynamic artdroids and their pets.
